Short answer

It depends where you are. In India, betting and gambling are mainly controlled by state laws. There is no single national "yes" or "no" for all sports betting. Some states allow certain forms (e.g. horse racing, some skill games). Others ban or restrict most betting. So the answer to "can you bet on sports in India?" is: only if your state’s laws allow it, and only in the way they allow.

What many people mean by "sports betting"

Usually they mean placing money on the result of a match or event – cricket, football, tennis, etc. That can be:

  • Through a legal, licensed operator (where the law allows).
  • Through an illegal or offshore site (which can be risky and may break the law).

We do not recommend or list any operators. We only explain how the law generally works.

How Indian law often works

  • Central law: The Public Gambling Act, 1867, and other central laws set a basic frame. They often ban running gambling houses but do not cover every case.
  • State law: States can have their own Acts and rules. So one state might allow horse racing or lotteries; another might ban almost all betting.
  • Online: Laws were written before the internet. So "online sports betting" is often a grey area. Some states treat it as illegal; others have not clearly said. You must check your state.

What you should do

  1. Check your state: Look at your state’s current gambling and betting laws.
  2. Get legal advice: If you are unsure, ask a lawyer in your state.
  3. Don’t assume: What is legal in one country or state is not always legal in yours.
  4. Stay safe: Even where legal, betting has risks. Only use money you can afford to lose.

Responsible betting

If you bet where it is legal, set a budget and time limits. Never chase losses. If betting becomes a problem, seek help. See our Responsible Gambling page. For more on the law, see Is Online Betting Legal in India?.
