What is problem gambling?

Problem gambling is when betting or gambling starts to harm your money, health, relationships, or work. You may find it hard to stop, chase losses, or hide your gambling from others. Recognising the signs early can help you get support.

Common signs

  • Spending more than you planned: You often bet more money or for longer than you intended.
  • Chasing losses: You try to win back lost money by betting again.
  • Borrowing or selling things to bet: You use money that was for something else, or borrow from friends, family, or loans.
  • Hiding your gambling: You lie about how much you bet or keep it secret from people close to you.
  • Thinking about it all the time: Betting is on your mind even when you are not doing it.
  • Mood and stress: You feel anxious, guilty, or irritable because of betting. It affects your sleep or concentration.
  • Relationships and work: Family or friends are worried, or your work or studies suffer.

What you can do

If these sound familiar, it is worth slowing down or stopping. Talk to someone you trust. Look for local support (e.g. Gamblers Anonymous or counselling). See our Responsible Gambling page for more links and tips.

For family and friends

If someone close to you shows these signs, you can encourage them to seek help. You can also get support for yourself. You are not responsible for their behaviour, but you can be part of the solution by being informed and supportive.
