Are they the same?

In everyday language, people often use "betting" and "gambling" in similar ways. Both mean risking money (or something of value) on an outcome that is uncertain. So in a broad sense, betting is a type of gambling. But the words can be used in slightly different ways.

How "betting" is often used

Betting usually means placing a wager on a specific event or result. For example: a sports match, an election, or a reality show. You are betting on something that will happen in the real world. The word is common in "sports betting" or "horse race betting."

How "gambling" is often used

Gambling is the wider term. It can include:

  • Betting on sports or events (as above).
  • Casino games (cards, roulette, slots).
  • Lotteries.
  • Any activity where you risk money on a chance outcome.

So all betting is gambling, but not all gambling is called "betting."

Do laws treat them differently?

In India, laws often use terms like "gambling," "betting," or "games of skill" without one fixed definition for everyone. Some states treat "games of skill" (e.g. certain card games or horse racing) differently from "games of chance." So the legal difference is not always the same as the everyday difference between the words "betting" and "gambling." You need to check your state’s laws.

Why it matters for you

  • Understanding: Knowing the words helps you read news and legal information.
  • Risk: Whether you call it betting or gambling, you can lose money. Both can be addictive.
  • Legal: Your state may allow some forms and ban others. Always check.

Responsible behaviour

Whatever the label, only risk money you can afford to lose. Set limits. Never chase losses. If you or someone you know has a problem, seek help. See our Responsible Gambling page.
